Now, this is strange. And I don't know if it's happened to anyone else. But, it has happened to me enough to count as several.
I am in the men’s bathroom, peeing (stay with me here, this goes somewhere), and some older fellow peeing next to me will say, “I remember those days,” pining for the days when he could pee with gusto.
As hard as that may be to believe, I swear it is true. And that it has happened more than once.
And I don't think it's me. I don't think I have some extra-strength pee-force.
And their tone is so tinged with nostalgia and reminiscence that you could not mistake it for perversion. No, no. The guy is remembering moments he never would have imagined he would want to remember. Moments and streams at urinals across the country (and perhaps the world) that he has come in contact with throughout the tenure of his life.
It’s not something you think about when you think about aging. That you will pee slower. Or even that, one day, you will miss your once-youthful stream. It makes you wonder whether somewhere there's another guy, older than the first guy, who's pining for the days when he pined for the days when he could pee with more force.
Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone else been stuck at a urinal, not sure of what you’re supposed to say to a guy longing for the days when he could pee without coaxing?
If so, what do you do?
“Thank you,” is the easy way out. That shows you’re appreciative and it tends to hide (maybe) some of the uncomfortableness of the situation. But, there’s part of me that wants to console the guy, too. To encourage him to keep at it because…well….because he has to.
Something in me that wants to say, “And you pee really good for your age.”
